Post subject: | Hog Body Maple neck binding advice please |
I made a maple neck (never again...its hard!) for this one and im just coming back to it after some time away. I was planning to bind in Maple and wanted to bind the FB. Will Maple binding on maple neck on Mahogany guitar look weird? I cant quite decide if i should use a darker binding.. Any thoughts gratefully received Steve Attachment: P1020502 (640x480).jpg Attachment: P1020503 (640x480).jpg

Maple neck with maple fingerboard binding would be weird... but maybe cool. Like the fingerboard is inlaid into the neck. Although if the neck is straight grained and binding is curly with a rosewood side purfling or something, I think the separation would be enough to look more normal, if that's what you want. I do think body binding matching the neck wood as closely as possible would look nice, more like the neck is part of the body rather than a separate piece tacked on. Maybe do non-matching fingerboard binding? Indian rosewood on a light Honduran rosewood fingerboard wood look awesome, I think. Looks like you've already got a nice Madagascar board slotted there, but you could save it for later if it's a scale length you do regularly. Or maybe mahogany binding on the Madagascar board? Could be an interesting look. Or Madagascar bindings matching the fingerboard, with a maple purfling strip between the binding and board. |

Thanks Dennis some cool ideas. I,m a bit limited in my choices living where I do between expensive shipments ![]() Tried koa didnt like it, plain maple neither. Tried a simple bwb with some curly maple and it looks fine I think with some dark dots Attachment: P1020516 (640x480) (2).jpg Attachment: P1020517 (640x480).jpg

I use Maple binding on many of my Mahogany guitars, but as already stated the trick is to have a purfling strip between the plate and the Maple to give contrast. This is the most important on the top especially where two very similar colors of wood will be meeting, and there needs to be a purfling line there to define the joint. As far as on the neck I also believe that it might look cool, but contrast again would be needed. That can be accomplished with a different wood for the neck binding or creative use of purfling again. |
